Sailing Uma
Custom Solar Installation for a Fully Electric Sailboat
Challenge
Dan and Kika wanted to power their life at sea using solar energy alone. As a fully electric sailboat operating without a generator, every watt mattered.
Their goal was to maximise every available surface on the boat while maintaining a clean, integrated look that felt like part of the deck rather than an add-on. The system needed to be walkable, durable and capable of delivering as much energy as possible for long-term world cruising.
Solution
Over a two-year collaboration with Sailing Uma, we designed and refined a fully custom solar deck tailored specifically to their boat.
Every available area was carefully measured, templated and optimised to the millimetre to maximise solar production. The project included custom-shaped solar panels, matching filler panels and a complete solar layout designed around the boat's unique geometry.
The result is a seamless walkable solar deck that combines high energy production with a clean integrated appearance.
Installed
- 1,500W custom solar array
- 17 custom solar panels
- 11 matching filler panels
- Custom solar layout and templating
- Walkable SoftGrip finish
- Black backsheet
- MAXEON™ Gen III back-contact solar cells (24.3% efficiency)
- 25 integrated bypass diodes
- 17 MPPTs
- Rear cable exits and rear connectors
- Fully integrated deck installation
Result
A fully electric sailing yacht powered primarily by solar energy.
By transforming most of the available deck space into solar-generating surfaces, the project maximised energy production while preserving a clean and walkable deck.
For a Pearson 36 built in 1972, this installation demonstrates how custom solar design can unlock levels of solar integration that would be difficult to achieve with standard panels.
